Dwarf Umbrella Watercolor

Sketchbook on the ground showing a watercolor of a Dwarf Umbrella Tree

I always find myself drawing and painting this Yellow Dwarf Umbrella Tree in my studio. Its crooked shape amazes me—it’s a wonder it’s still standing in its pot! For this watercolor piece, I started with a continuous blind contour sketch using a Uni-ball Eye Micro pen.

I worked in a Strathmore Softcover Mixed Media sketchbook, which has pages with a velvety texture and a cover that feels like suede. The dimensions are 7.75 x 9.75 inches (19.7 x 24.8 cm), and the paper weight is 90 lb (1940 g/m²).

For the colors, I used Daniel Smith’s Moonglow, Perylene Green, Tigers Eye Genuine, Green Gold, Lunar Black, and Perylene Violet, with just a touch of Winsor & Newton’s Cobalt Turquoise Light. For small accents on the green leaves, I added Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle Yellow. To highlight and enhance details, I incorporated a Uni-ball Signo broad white pen and a PC-3M Uni Posca white pen for the dark leaves.
