Watercolor Experimentation

This week, I’ve been experimenting with a few new approaches in my watercolor practice, pushing myself out of my comfort zone. One technique I tried was layering loose washes over ink sketches. Instead of sticking to the contours of the subject, I let the washes flow freely. While I’ve admired this style in the work of others, my results felt less successful—something I’ll need to revisit with more practice.

I also experimented with wet-on-wet painting to create atmospheric perspective, particularly to suggest distant trees. This approach required patience and several tries on practice paper before I felt ready to commit it to my sketchbook. The effect, though subtle, added a soft depth that I’m excited to refine further.

These experiments reminded me that learning new techniques is rarely linear, but the process itself is what makes it rewarding.
